Issues Integrating modern genomics tools into crop breeding is necessary to fast track breeding efficiency and rapid progress. when combined with speed breeding methods, this integration can substantially accelerate the breeding process, leading to faster access of improved varieties to farmers. The international peanut genome initiative brings together scientists from the united states, china, brazil, india and israel to delineate peanut genome sequences, characterize the genetic and phenotypic variation in cultivated and wild peanuts and develop genomic tools for peanut breeding. This review focuses on updates and accomplishments of the pgi in three areas: (1) brief chronology of recent efforts in peanut genomics; (2) recent developments in molecular markers; and (3) recent advances in genetic linkage maps in diploid wild relatives and cultivated peanut.
