So, When Did CRT Shaders Get So Good? (CRT Royale) | ResetEra Probably the first time i've really thought one of these filters came close to capturing the look of a crt. i took some pictures and it comes across pretty well but it even better in motion/in person. Choosing a shader depends on your personal preference. while some shaders look wonderful to one person's eyes they might look bad to another. there are lots of options out there to choose from, and many use "crt guest advanced" as the core of their work.

So, When Did CRT Shaders Get So Good? (CRT Royale) | ResetEra Crt royale isn't made to look good, it's made to look accurate. there are enough comparisons online that show how well it works, but you really need 4k resolution to get it to look right. One of the main reasons i switched all my standalone emulators to retroarch years ago. unfortunately, my current hardware is old so these more demanding shaders (like crt royale) are slow on it, but even lightweight shaders can bring a look that is missing when there is no shader at all. I so far used crt royale most of the time, it's the one thing i really want a 4k display for to make proper use of it. i'll give crt easy mode a try too and okay alright do that!. I've never understood the love for crt filters. back then, what most gamers wanted was to get rid of all crt artifacts. i remember seeing a snes game with a s video cable. it looked so crisp and clean. now people want to play with scanlines smeared with bilinear vaseline.

The mistake many people make with these crt shaders is judging their appearance on pc monitors, sitting only from 1 2ft away. what looks good on a large 4k tv, sitting on a couch from 6 8ft away can look terrible on a (relatively) small 4k pc monitor. I assume this would be a good method to get crt royale working nicely with dreamcast cores, which typically output in 480p instead of 240. i looked into this a while back and tried digging through the user settings, but i don't think it occured to me to try turning interlacing off. Why the hell isn't anyone discussing the crt royale port? i saw many people waiting for it and it appeared! although not 100% the same as in retroarch (due to the limitations of reshade), it's still pretty damn good. it would be perfect if it weren't for the flickering when interlacing is enabled. Even fan favorites like royale are not my favorite at this stage, i use a mix of crt consumer when playing on handhelds (like retroid pocket 2), lcd shaders for handheld games or more complex crt and film grain combinations when playing on a 65 inch oled.
