Introduction To IP Version 6 - DocsLib To address these concerns, the internet engineering task force (ietf) has developed a suite of protocols and standards known as ip version 6 (ipv6). this new version, previously called ip the next generation (ipng), incorporates the concepts of many proposed methods for updating the ipv4 protocol. This paper provides a foundation of internet standards based ipv6 concepts and is intended for network engineers and support professionals who are already familiar with basic networking concepts and tcp/ip.

IP | PDF Internet protocol version 6 (ipv6) is the replacement for ipv4, and it is designed to address the depletion of ip addresses and change the way traffic is managed. Hosts or routers connected to the same link layer network will have ip addresses with the same network part, but different host part. 000 0000. modern (classless) routed networks rather have explicit prefix lengths or netmasks. so ideally you can't just look at an ip address and tell what its prefix length or netmask should be. Ipv6 provides two competing ways for hosts to obtain their full ip addresses. one is dhcpv6, based on ipv4’s dhcp, in which the entire address is handed out by a dhcpv6 server. Development of the internet protocol’s “next generation,” ipv6 (also known as ipng), is well underway as a replacement for ipv4. this shortage of ip addresses created the need for a new ip version that provides a better addressing scheme; however, that is not the only change. Ipv6 addresses are written in eight groups of four hex digits, with a f preferred over a f (rfc 5952). the groups are separated by colons, and have leading 0’s removed, eg. fedc:13:1654:310:fedc:bc37:61:3210. Ipv6, the next generation protocol, provides approximately 340 undecillion ip addresses (see figure 1), ensuring availability of new ip addresses far into the future, as well as promoting the continued expansion and innovation of internet technology.
